About SmartApplets

Built for people who’d rather not upload their PDFs

SmartApplets is a free, browser-based PDF toolkit. We don’t run servers that process your files, we don’t have an account system, and we don’t have a paid tier. Here’s why.

Our story

SmartApplets started in early 2025 as a small WordPress side project called PrimeSEOTools — a collection of mostly-SEO utilities built to learn browser-side JavaScript. As we built the first PDF tool (Merge PDF), we noticed something: every popular “free” PDF site we benchmarked against quietly uploaded files to their servers. iLovePDF. Smallpdf. PDF24. TinyWow. All of them. The privacy policies disclosed it. Most users didn’t realize.

We started using the Merge PDF tool ourselves — for bank statements, government forms, signed contracts. The kind of files you’d never want sitting on someone else’s server, even for “60 seconds before automatic deletion” as the policies promise. We wanted to combine 4 PDFs without sending them anywhere. Surprisingly, no one offered that.

So in May 2026 we relaunched the site as SmartApplets with a new mission: build PDF tools that provably don’t upload your files. Not “we promise we delete them,” not “we don’t read them,” not “we use encryption in transit.” Just: the file never leaves your browser, full stop. You can verify this yourself in your browser’s Network tab.

We wanted to combine 4 PDFs without sending them anywhere. Surprisingly, no one offered that. So we built it.

SmartApplets now has 11 free PDF tools, with more being added regularly. Everything runs entirely in your browser. The site is supported by Google AdSense — clearly-labelled, non-intrusive ads on the page itself. We never charge users, never gate features, and never sell data (we have none to sell).

What we offer today

SmartApplets currently provides 11 free PDF tools, all running entirely in your browser:

Coming in late 2026: Image tools (compressor, resizer, background remover), basic calculators (BMI, EMI, percentage, age), and unit converters. We launched with PDF tools because we wanted to do one category exceptionally well before expanding.

Our 5 pledges to you

We’ve put these in writing so you can hold us to them. We treat them as binding commitments, not marketing.

No file uploads — ever

Your files never leave your browser. There is no server we can use to process them, and we will never build one.

No paid tier — ever

Every tool is free for everyone. There is no “premium,” no credits, no daily limit, and no watermark on output.

No sign-up — ever

Open the page, use the tool. No account, no email, no verification. Just the work you came to do.

No data sales — ever

We have no files, logs, or analytics on your usage to sell. We collect only the standard page traffic data needed to run AdSense.

No AI training — ever

We do not use your files to train any AI model. We technically cannot — your files never reach us in the first place.

The values behind every tool

Six principles shape how we build SmartApplets. We come back to them on every decision.

Privacy by architecture, not policy

“We promise we won’t” isn’t enough. The tools are built so it’s technically impossible for us to access your files.

Speed

No upload, no server queue. Tools run on your CPU and finish in milliseconds. We measure ourselves against this.

Simplicity

Each tool does one job exceptionally. No bloated all-in-one editor. Pick your task, do it, leave.

Honesty

We label our ads. We disclose our limitations. We don’t trick you into a “free trial” that turns paid. Trust is the product.

Accessibility

Free for everyone, everywhere. Any device, any browser. No regional pricing, no “Pro” tier locked behind currency.

Open standards

Built on open-source libraries (pdf-lib, PDF.js, Transformers.js). No lock-in. Your output files are standard PDFs anyone can read.

How we compare to iLovePDF, Smallpdf, and PDF24

The popular “free” PDF tool sites are good products — but their business model requires uploading your files. Here’s the structural difference.

Prices and features approximate as of May 2026. Direct competitors have great products — they just made a different architectural choice that requires file uploads. We made ours so it doesn’t.

How we keep the lights on

If everything is free and we don’t upload your files (so we can’t sell or analyze them), how does SmartApplets pay its hosting bill? Simple, and we want to be transparent about it:

  • Google AdSense ads on tool pages and blog posts. Clearly labelled. Never above-the-fold over the tool itself. Never in motion or pop-up format.
  • Affiliate links in some blog posts where we recommend products we genuinely use (e.g. Adobe, Foxit). We only recommend tools that meet our own quality bar.
  • No tracking-pixel resales, no email list cross-promotions, no “Pro” upsell modals — none of the patterns that make competitor sites annoying to use.

Transparency note

SmartApplets is currently a single-developer project. Revenue from AdSense covers hosting and domain costs, with some left over to fund development time. We are not VC-funded, not part of a larger media group, and not building this to flip. We expect SmartApplets will be around for the long term because it’s cheap to run — no servers processing files means no per-user infrastructure cost.

What’s coming next

We have an active roadmap. Some highlights for the rest of 2026:

  • Q2 2026 — More PDF tools. PDF to Word, PDF OCR (extract searchable text from scanned PDFs), redact PDF (black out sensitive content), e-sign PDF.
  • Q3 2026 — Image tools category. Browser-based image compressor, image resizer, background remover, format converter. All same privacy guarantees.
  • Q4 2026 — Calculators and converters. BMI, EMI, percentage, age, unit conversions. Small, fast, focused.
  • Ongoing — PDF blog content. Practical guides on PDF workflows: visa applications, e-signatures, redaction best practices, document compression.

We add tools when they meet our bar: 100% browser-based, no upload, mobile-friendly, and genuinely better than the competition on something measurable (speed, privacy, quality, or features).
